Fritz Harper Abernathy, 24, of 513 N. Court, was injured fatally in a two-car crash one-fourth mile west of Rome stop on Highway 34 in Henry County Saturday about 3:30 p.m. He died en route to University Hospitals in Iowa City.

James Ellis, 21 of Oskaloosa, a passenger in the car driven by Abernathy, and James Martin Nelson, 28, of Des Moines, driver of the other car, were taken to Memorial Hospital in Mouth Pleasant. Ellis sustained a concussion and head and chin lacerations not believed serious, officials of the State Highway Patrol in Fairfield said today.

NELSON was accompanied by his wife. He was treated for lacerations. She was not injured.

According to the Highway Patrol, Abernathy, traveling west attempted to pass another car and failed to get back into his lane. He struck the east-bound car driven by Nelson. Both cars, Buicks, were completely demolished, the Patrol official said.

HE WAS a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.

Surviving are his wife, Connie; a daughter, Joannie Lee Abernathy; and his mother, Mrs. Blossom Hallberg of Ottumwa Route 4. His father died Dec. 22, 1954.

The service was at 2:30 p.m. today at the Johnson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James L. Postel, rector of the Trinity Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial was in Blakesburg Cemetery.
Biography
Johann Joseph Fritz was born in Lech, Austria on the 27th of June, 1824. He was first child of Benedict and Veronica Jochum Fritz. Joseph's mother died on the 1st of May 1837, when Joseph almost 13 years old.

Growing up, Joseph had four younger brothers, Benedict, Christian, Anthony, and Basil. He had two younger sisters who each died as a baby.

In spring of 1853, Joseph left Austria with his brother Benedict, their destination the United States. The may have been on the Waltham which left Le Havre, France for the port in New York City, arriving on the 5th of April, 1853. They spent 36 days at sea until their arrival in New York City.

There is an account that Joseph's younger brother Christian left for America in 1852. According to this timeline, Joseph and Benedict traveled to Cleveland, Ohio in search of Christian, only to find the younger brother had left there. Other accounts, including census information on Christian, his obituary, and a ship passenger log which may include him, all claim his immigration took place in 1854. History may never reveal whether Christian was in Ohio prior to Joseph's arrival, or if he arrived in the United States after his older brothers.

Following the brothers' arrival in Ohio, Benedict traveled from Cleveland to Columbus, where he took employment as a house painter. It is likely Joseph was with Benedict at this time. Although Benedict remained for only eight months before heading to California to mine for gold,, Joseph took permanent residence in this city.

In about the year 1855, an immigrant of Baden, Germany named Catherine Geisinger moved to Columbus. Joseph married Catherine that same year.

By the year 1862, Joseph lived at 267 East Walnut Street, a small street sandwiched between Town Street to the north and Rich Street to the south, and east of the Scioto river. He lived at this address the rest of his life.

Joseph continued to work as a painter. In 1864 Joseph may have worked for "G. C. L. repair shops." In 1867, Joseph worked for "C. \& I. C. Railway Shops," possibly painting train cars.

Family tales
What is curious is the stories of Joseph that later circulated in the families descended from Benedict and Christian.

<blockquote>Three [Fritz] brothers came to this country in 1852 and 1853. They went to California near Placerville, where they made their gold strike and where they met Gephart Schoech who was responsible for them returning to Blakesburg, Iowa to live. One of the brothers, Josef, left the gold fields with his gold, but never reached Iowa and was never heard of again. It was assumed that he was killed for the gold he carried.</blockquote>

These words tell of the brothers Benedict, Joseph, and Christian. [Genealogical Table of the Families Fritz|The document] accompanies a single-line family tree which includes a fourth brother, Anton Fritz, and continues to Anton's grandson Franz Fritz. Likely Franz authored these documents.

This excerpt was likely left by Franz following his 1969 trip where he visited Blakesburg and met with Christian's descendants. Because Edward Fritz (NumberEdwardBarnhartFritz) wrote letters to Franz, it's possible Franz wrote these at a later date, and mailed them to Edward. The writings were microfilmed on the 24th of June, 1975, following a visit with Gertrude Alice Fritz that year from another Austrian cousin, Gerhard Fritz.

It is unknown how much of this tale Franz learned from his father or his grandfather, and what he learned from his visit to the United States. A similar tale was passed by Benedict's granddaughter Ona Mae Fritz to her granddaughter, Christine. Christine was in junior high and learning the history of the gold rush when her grandmother Ona told her the story. According to Christine:

<blockquote>[Joseph] is the one my grandmother, Ona, talked about. She said her uncle was killed on the journey back from California. Someone tried to rob them of the gold and her uncle was killed</blockquote>

Christine would have heard this story before Franz's visit. Also, Franz's visit was with Christian's descendants, not with Benedict's descendants. Gertrude at some point was in contact with Benedict's descendants, so it's possible she learned the story through Ona.

A similar story passed through Benedict's grandson Edward's elder daughter, Barbara, as conveyed by her sister Janet:

<blockquote>"My sis keeps mentioning a long-lost brother of Benedict's, one who was rumored to have traveled to the gold fields in California and was never heard from again. Could this be Joseph?"</blockquote>

The story sounds cut-and-dried. The microfilm mentions the brothers arrived in the US by 1853. They state Benedict mined for four years before moving to Blakesburg. This would be 1857. If Joseph were killed at this time, he would not appear on any federal censuses. If he died somewhere between California and Iowa, it would be difficult to find a death record. End of story.

However, details fail to add up. A biography of Benedict written in Portrait and Biographical Album of Wapello County, Iowa said Joseph "died in Columbus, Ohio, in 1884". An autobiography by Gephart Schoech mentioned Benedict at his gold mine in California, but made no mention of Joseph. With the availability of extensive collections of records easily accessible via the Internet, records of Joseph Fritz in Columbus, Ohio were able to be linked together to provide a convincing case that Joseph Fritz did indeed survive and raised a family. With the ubiquity of low-price y-DNA testing, a matching DNA test between Joseph's descendant, Bob Fritz, and Anton's descendant, Bruno Fritz, has finally been able to confirm the falseness of the story of Joseph's murder.

There was a letter, perhaps from Gertrude, stating roughly that Benedict's descendants knew what became of Joseph. Citation needed This suggests Christian's descendants did not know, and the myth about his death came entirely from someone on the Benedict line, rather than being a story known by both lines.
Mrs. A. J. Beebe Died in Lewis Saturday

Mrs. A. J. Beebe, who for the past several weeks had been suffering from cancer, died at her home in Lewis Saturday morning at two o'clock. During her illness she was a patient sufferer and planned her funeral arrangements to the last detail. She was resigned to her fate and was cheerful to the end. Everything that careful nursing and medical skill could do for her would not prolong her life. Zola Vernon, daughter of the late R. D. and Sarah Vernon, was born in Anita, Iowa, December 29, 1888, died at her home in Lewis April 1, 1944 aged 55 years, 3 months and 2 days. She spent her girlhood in Anita and was happily united in marriage to A. J. Beebe on June 8, 1910. They made their home in Anita and Council Bluffs and located in Lewis in 1918. Mrs. Beebe was active in all social work and at the time of her death was Seventh District President of the Rural Mail Carriers Auxiliary. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star of Lewis a member of the Methodist Church, served as a member of the Lewis school board and also the Cass county school board. Always willing and ready to do what she could in any thing that would be a benefit to the community in which she had long resided. She is survived by her husband, a son, Vernon Beebe, of Kamuela, Hawaii, who made a trip to see her after she was stricken, one grandson, one sister, Mrs. I. F. Hayenga, of George, Iowa, who assister in her care, two brothers, E. D. Vernon of Monticello, Iowa and H. T. Vernon, of Ardmore, Oklahoma and a very large circle of friends. A daughter Nola Alice, died in infancy. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Lewis Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. A Breeling, her pastor, officiated at the services. The singing was by Mrs. C. W. Hancock and Mrs. Colbert Marker. Mrs. Gale Knoke was the accompanist. Songs were ``Safe in the Arms of Jesus and ``It is Well With My Soul. Casket bearers were Byron Casady, Eldon Burnside, Russell Marshall, Wilbur Breckerbaumer, J. T. Rieneka and Marion Baker. Following the services at the church, which were very largely attended by sorrowing relatives and friends, the remains were taken to the Anita Cemetery where they were tenderly laid away on the family lot. The sympathy of all goes out to those who are left to mourn the passing of this good wife, mother and friend.
Death Call Wm. Shea, Railway Vet / William Shea Is Claimed By Death

William Shea, 75, Wapello County pioneer who rose to national prominence in the service of the Milwaukee railroad, died at 8:45 p. m. Thursday at the University Hospital, Iowa City.

Entering the employ of the Milwaukee railroad in 1884 when he first helped to build the line from Cedar Rapids to Ottumwa, Mr. Shea continued in the construction department of that railroad until in 1934 he attained the position of maintenance superintendent for the entire Milwaukee railroad system, with offices in Chicago.

Hener[sic] he was in charge of 11,000 miles of main line track and another 5,000 miles of side tracks, and was often required to travel as much as 12,000 miles a month in the supervision of that great company's transit lanes.

While his duties in this position required that he maintain an office in Chicago, he always clung to Wapello county, in general, where he began his railroad career, and Blakesburg, in particular, where he maintained his home and continued his farming business, specializing in the raising of prize Hereford cattle.

Born August 13, 1867 in Eddyville and without the benefit of more than an eighth grade formal schooling. Mr. Shea's rise in prominence in the railroad world held all the features of a storybook success. His father, John Shea, gave him his frist[sic] job with the Milwaukee when he was 17 years old. Only a year later he was made a section foreman here, but in 1887 he was called in as construction foreman in the building of the Milwaukee line from Ottumwa to Kansas City.

Roadmaster in 1891.

On January 1, 1891, he was made road master of the Ottumwa division, where he served until 1918, when he went to Chicago as general road master of the entire Milwaukee system. Ten years later he was named assistant engineer of maintenance and from that position, in 1934, he was promoted to the maintenance superintendency of the Milwaukee system, a position which he held until his retirement.

In the meantime, he retained his love for his Iowa farm where he kept constant contact in the business of raising fine cattle. He delegated the management of his farm, in his absence, to his son, John Shea but claimed Blakesburg as his personal residence throughout his career with the Milwaukee that took him through many states.

Funeral Monday

Mr. Shea is survived by his son, John B. Shea of Blakesburg, and by one daughter, Mrs. Edna Maloney of Ottumwa, and by one granddaughter, Patricia Alice Shea of Blakesburg. He is also survived by four brothers, John Shea of Two Harbors, Minn., James R. Shea of Grand Rapids, Minn., Jerry Shea and Dan R. Shea, both of Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Gertrude C. Shea, who died January 15, 1942, also by one daughter, Alice, and three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a. m. Monday from St. Mary's Catholic church, where a requiem high mass will be celebrated by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. M. Walsh, V. F., and burial will be made in the Blakesburg cemetery.

The body will remain at the Johnson funeral parlor until 1 p. m. Saturday when it will be taken to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Patrick Maloney of 316 North Jefferson Street.
Blakesburg, Oct. 10. &mdash; William Fritz, 69 years old and a life-long resident of this community, was found dead at the side of the road just south of the city at 6:30 o'clock Wednesday evening, with death the result of a stroke of apoplexy. Fritz, a prominent farmer and business man of this section, was returning to the city from his farm which is located about one-half mile south of town. While he was making the trip in on horseback, it is thought that he had dismounted before the stroke proved fatal. His body was found by Dr. O. Barnhardt, a veterinary surgeon, who was driving into Blakesburg. Dr. B. L. Basinger, local physician, was immediately called and pronounced the death the result of apoplexy.

Fritz, who was a bachelor, is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. William Shea, Mrs. Louise Abernathy, Henry Fritz, and Frank Fritz, all of Blakesburg, and by eleven nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Frank Hardy who lived in Ottumwa, and by one brother, George Fritz.

The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the home of his sister, Mrs. Abernathy, in charge of the Rev. Fred Tucker. Interment will be made in the Blakesburg Cemetery.
