Obituary

The following obituary appears in the Earlham Library Obituary Collection. It is dated May 1933.

Emma Schumacher Fritz, daughter of Henry and Caroline Schumacher was born in Johnson county, near Iowa City, January 29, 1870 and died on May 27, 1933 at the age of 63 years, three months and 28 days.

At the age of two she moved with her parents to Adair county where she attended school and later attended the Dexter Normal school. She was a teacher in the Madison county schools for eight years.

On March 18, 1897, she was united in marriage to W. B. Fritz and to this union six children were born, five of whom are left with the husband to mourn her loss; Arlie of Adel; Clarence of California; Callie Couch of Valley Junction; and Evelyn and Gertrude, at home. She also leaves to mourn her passing two sisters, Mrs. Henry Willrich and Mrs. Robert Murphy of Dexter, and three grandchildren.

This transcript is taken from an online posting at http://iagenweb.org/boards/madison/obituaries/index.cgi?review=168747.

Notes

Her "three grandchildren" would have been her son William's son Calvin Wayne Fritz and daughter Barbara Jean Fritz, and her daughter Caroline's son Leland Merrill Couch. These three children were all born before Emma's death. Emma's daughter Evelyn had two children, but I do not know when they were born. This obituary indirectly suggests they were born after Emma's death.
